“We had a wonderful day on the Bird Safari trip from Honningsvag. While most of the Hurtigruten passengers went by bus to the North Cape, our bus load went to the small fishing village of Gjesvaer. It was great to go up on top of the plateau after several days on the water looking up at the surrounding cliffs. On the way we saw reindeer beside the road, and some marvellous barren snowy scenery. We could also see North Cape in the distance.
From Gjesvaer we went on a small fishing boat out to the Gjesvaerstappan Bird Sanctuary where we saw an amazing variety of sea birds. On the way the boat was surrounded by thousands of puffins on the water, flying and diving for fish. They are so quick that my camera couldn't cope but I will never forget the spectacle. Nearer the islands we could see gannets, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, and huge sea eagles overhead as well as many other species. There was a good commentary and we had plenty of time to observe the various nesting colonies as we went around the islands.
We had a truly memorable day, and felt that we had made the right decision to choose the Bird Safari over the North Cape trip. It really was one of the best days of our fantastic Norwegian Coastal Voyage.”
